AI Safety
Effective date: [EFFECTIVE DATE]
Gnosis: Spiritual Library includes the Guide, an AI reading companion, and other AI features such as Clarify, comparisons and summaries. This page explains what the Guide is and how it responds when someone may be in crisis. It is part of our Terms of Use.
The Guide is an AI
The Guide is an artificial-intelligence system, not a person. It is powered by OpenAI language models and works from the texts in the Gnosis library. The app says so on the Guide screen and below the message box, and the Guide is instructed to identify itself as an AI and never to claim to be human or to have lived experience.
The Guide can be wrong. It can misread a passage, attribute a quotation to the wrong source, or state something that is not true. It is not a therapist, counselor, doctor, lawyer or religious authority, and it is not an emergency service. No person monitors conversations as they happen.
AI companions may not be suitable for some minors. Gnosis is for people 13 and older (16 and older in the EEA, the UK and Switzerland). Parents and guardians should decide whether the Guide is right for a teenager in their care.
If you are in crisis
If you may harm yourself or someone else, or you are in immediate danger, do not wait for an AI response:
- In the US, call 911 for an emergency, or call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline).
- Elsewhere, call your local emergency number or a local crisis line.
- Contact someone you trust who can be with you.
How the Guide responds to crisis messages
In text and voice conversations, the Guide is instructed to follow this protocol when a message suggests suicidal thoughts, self-harm, or immediate danger:
- Put safety first, before any reading or spiritual discussion, and leave out spiritual framing and scripture.
- Encourage contacting emergency services or a crisis line — in the US, 911 for immediate danger and 988 for crisis support — and someone nearby who can stay with the person.
- Never give methods of self-harm, dangerous fasting or breath-holding practices, or medical-treatment promises, and never describe distress as spiritual progress.
These safeguards depend on the AI recognizing the situation, and it may not always do so. That is why the crisis resources above are shown in the app and on this page.
