Psalms 100

1.Make a joyful noise unto the LORD, all ye lands.

2.Serve the LORD with gladness: come before his presence with singing.

3.Know ye that the LORD he is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.

4.Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name.

5.For the LORD is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth to all generations.

Asked of Guide

Why does the psalm call Israel 'the sheep of his pasture' in a song of praise?

The image ‘the sheep of his pasture’ names dependence and belonging: God is the maker and caretaker who provides identity and sustenance for his people. The psalm ties that pastoral metaphor to worship — coming into God’s presence ‘with singing’ and ‘thanksgiving’ flows from being known and tended by him.

The final verse gives the reason for praise: ‘the LORD is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth to all generations.’ This echoes themes in Deuteronomy about covenant care and in Psalm 23’s shepherd imagery, both of which ground joyful service in God’s faithful, ongoing goodness.
