Psalms 128

1.Blessed is every one that feareth the LORD; that walketh in his ways.

2.For thou shalt eat the labour of thine hands: happy shalt thou be, and it shall be well with thee.

3.Thy wife shall be as a fruitful vine by the sides of thine house: thy children like olive plants round about thy table.

4.Behold, that thus shall the man be blessed that feareth the LORD.

5.The LORD shall bless thee out of Zion: and thou shalt see the good of Jerusalem all the days of thy life.

6.Yea, thou shalt see thy children’s children, and peace upon Israel.

Why does Psalm 128 link fearing the Lord with family prosperity and peace in Jerusalem?

Psalm 128 portrays fear of the Lord as the root that shapes daily life: “that walketh in his ways” leads to visible rewards—“eat the labour of thine hands” and a home where the wife is “as a fruitful vine” and children “like olive plants.” The poem ties personal piety to household flourishing so the covenant blessing appears in ordinary work, marriage, and offspring.

The psalm then widens the blessing from the home to the national scene: blessing “out of Zion” and seeing “the good of Jerusalem” positions family wellbeing as part of Israel’s communal destiny. This matches themes in Deuteronomy, where obedience brings land, offspring, and peace, and echoes Psalm 1’s link between righteous living and flourishing.
