Psalms 133

1.Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!

2.It is like the precious ointment upon the head, that ran down upon the beard, even Aaron’s beard: that went down to the skirts of his garments;

3.As the dew of Hermon, and as the dew that descended upon the mountains of Zion: for there the LORD commanded the blessing, even life for evermore.

Asked of Guide

Why does the psalm compare unity to Aaron’s anointing oil and Hermon’s dew?

The psalm uses two concrete images to show unity’s overflowing blessing: the “precious ointment” that ran from Aaron’s head down to his garments, and the dew of Hermon descending on Zion. The oil image links unity to priestly consecration and visible, fragrant abundance; the dew image links it to life-giving refreshment that nourishes the whole land.

Together the images explain why “the LORD commanded the blessing, even life for evermore.” The book of Leviticus and the narratives about Aaron’s anointing give the ritual background for the oil, and elsewhere in the Psalms dew is a standard sign of God’s sustaining favor.
