Surah al-Fil refers to the Year of the Elephant — the year, traditionally placed around 570 CE, when the Christian Abyssinian general Abraha marched on Mecca with an army that included a war elephant, intending to destroy the Ka’ba and redirect Arabian pilgrimage to a cathedral he had built in San’a. Ibn Ishaq’s Sira preserves the story in detail: the elephant refused to advance toward the sanctuary, and a sudden plague of birds carrying small stones devastated the army. Tradition places the Prophet’s birth in this same year, which is why the surah carries unusual weight in early Muslim memory — the sanctuary was preserved at the very moment its eventual restorer was being born.
