Surah Quraysh is paired in classical commentary with the preceding surah al-Fil — many mufassirun, including Ubayy ibn Ka’b in early manuscripts, treated them as a single surah. The connection is causal: because the elephant army was destroyed and the Ka’ba protected, the Quraysh — the Prophet’s tribe and the custodians of the sanctuary — gained the prestige and security to run their two annual trade caravans, the rihlat al-shita’ wal-sayf, winter to Yemen and summer to Syria. The whole Meccan economy depended on safe passage that other Arabian tribes did not enjoy.
