Mandala 10: HYMN CLXXII. Dawn.
1.WITH all thy beauty come: the kine approaching with full udders follow on thy path.
2.Come with kind thoughts, most liberal, rousing the warrior’s hymn of praise, with bounteous ones,
3.As nourishers we tie the thread, and, liberal with our bounty, offer sacrifice.
4.Dawn drives away her Sister’s gloom, and, through her excellence, makes her retrace her path.
Asked of Guide
Why does the hymn call Dawn 'most liberal' and link her to kine and sacrifice?
The hymn praises Dawn as a generous force whose arrival brings abundance: “the kine approaching with full udders” and “liberal with our bounty” tie her to livestock, wealth, and the prosperity that enables ritual giving. Dawn’s generosity makes proper worship possible, since the people respond by “offer[ing] sacrifice” and tying the ritual thread as nourishers.
Dawn’s action is also moral and social: she “drives away her Sister’s gloom,” restoring order and encouraging courage—“rousing the warrior’s hymn of praise.” This connects to Rig Veda themes where cosmic light sustains social life, similar to how the Hymns to Agni present a divine presence that both provides resources and receives offerings.
