Mandala 5: HYMN XXIV. Agni.
1.O AGNI, be our nearest Friend, be thou a kind deliverer and a gracious Friend.
2.Excellent Agni, come thou nigh to us, and give us wealth most splendidly renowned.
3.So hear us, listen to this call of ours, and keep us far from every sinful man.
4.To thee then, O Most Bright, O Radiant God, we come with prayer for happiness for our friends.
Asked of Guide
Why do the rishis call Agni both 'Friend' and 'Most Bright' here?
They address Agni as “nearest Friend” because Agni functions as the household and sacrificial presence who connects worshippers to the gods; calling him a Friend asks for protection, deliverance, and shared prosperity. The supplication for wealth and to “keep us far from every sinful man” treats Agni as an intimate protector whose nearness makes divine favor practical and social.
They call him “Most Bright, O Radiant God” to name Agni’s cosmic, illuminating power that legitimates the ritual appeal and ensures blessings reach others—“we come with prayer for happiness for our friends.” This echoes the Rig Veda’s larger portrait of Agni as both domestic mediator and luminous deity, as also emphasized in other hymns of Mandala 1 where Agni bridges humans and gods.
