Mandala 9: HYMN XXXV. Soma Pavamana.

1.Pour forth on us abundant wealth, O Pavamana, with thy stream. Wherewith thou mayest find us light

2.O Indu, swayer of the sea, shaker of all things, flow thou on, Bearer of wealth to us with might.

3.With thee for Hero, Valiant One! may we subdue our enemies: Let what is precious flow to us.

4.Indu arouses strength the Sage who strives for victory, winning power, Discovering holy works and means.

5.Mover of speech, we robe him with our songs as he is purified Soma, the Guardian of the folk;

6.On whose way, Lord of Holy Law, most richi as he is purified. The people all have set their hearts.

Asked of Guide

Why does the hymn keep calling Soma “Pavamana” and asking him to pour wealth and strength on the people?

The hymn addresses Soma as Pavamana — “purifying” or “poured forth” — and treats his flowing as the sacrificial libation that renews the community. Verses ask him to “flow thou on” and to be “Bearer of wealth,” linking Soma’s physical pressing and pouring with social well‑being: his stream makes the people “light” and grants victory and precious gains.

Calling Soma the “Mover of speech” and “Lord of Holy Law” ties his purification to order: his rising sanctifies the sacrificer, robes him with song, and makes him “most richi.” This follows the Rigveda’s broader pattern, echoed in other hymns of Mandala 9, where Soma’s consecrating flow is the medium through which cosmic power becomes social prosperity and ritual authority.
