1.AFTER his ancient splendour, they, the bold, have drawn the bright milk from The Sage who wins a thousand gifts.

Why does the hymn call Soma both a sage and like the Sun (Sūrya)?
The hymn presents Soma as a living divinity whose roles blend: “The Sage who wins a thousand gifts” names Soma as wise, sacrificer and bestower, while “in aspect he is like the Sun” gives him the Sun’s visible brilliance and celestial motion. The poem treats Soma’s pouring and flowing—“Seven currents flowing through the sky,” and “Thou, Indu, in thy brilliancy, pourest on us”—as actions that bridge inner wisdom and outer radiance.
This merging is consistent with Vedic habit of identifying gods by function and image; the same pattern appears in other Rig Veda hymns where Indra or Agni carry both epithets and cosmological roles. The result is a single presence who illuminates ritual (sage) and lights the world (Sun), offering wealth and nourishment to gods and people alike.
