The Infinite (bhuman) is bliss. There is no bliss in anything finite. Infinity only is bliss. The Sanskrit is yo vai bhuma tat sukham, nalpe sukham asti, and it is one of the foundational verses of the entire Upanishadic literature. Every later articulation of sat-cit-ananda rests on it. The chain has finally arrived at the rung beyond which there is no further rung, and the rung is bliss itself. Compare Augustine’s restless heart line in the first paragraph of the Confessions: nothing finite can give us rest because we are not finite at the floor. The shape of the human appetite is itself proof of where it tends.
