Tenth Suggestive Lesson

We do not need things, but we need God. To the God-consciousness is added everything needful. The divine voice within, which has been drowned by external noises, must become articulate. I listen to it! I utter it! I hear it! I obey it! I am one with it! I am it! In my new experience I turn within, and am led to exclaim with Thomas, “My Lord and my God!”

I listen to it! I utter it! I hear it! I obey it! I am one with it! I am it! Wood lets the meditation climb in escalating identification toward the Thomas-cry from John 20:28 (my Lord and my God). The structure is striking — the practitioner moves through six grammatical positions in a single sentence, ending at full identification. Ramana Maharshi's atma-vichara works the same architecture in reverse: ask who am I, peel away each false answer, end at the only thing that does not require asserting. Eckhart's preaching on the seelengrund (soul-ground) makes the same arrival in Rhineland German. The risk Wood does not pause to flag is that the climactic I am it! can shade into spiritual inflation if the prior practice has not done its dismantling work. The Spirit is power. It goes behind appearances and knows what is real. It is. It abides. It rules.

Our life is a divine infoldment and a human unfoldment. Though seemingly hidden, it is made in God’s image and after his likeness.

The reading is consistent with the long contemplative tradition of inward returns: Augustine's Confessions VII reads the parable as the soul's return to itself in God; Eckhart preached the same in Sermon 12 on the Prodigal; the Sufi tradition has its own version in the parable-literature of return to the origin. The pastoral instinct that survives is humble: the return begins with self-recognition, not with self-improvement. I am never more alone, for “Thou art with me,” “Thou hast beset me behind and before.”

I now behold my own ideal and potential completeness. I lack nothing. I am well. I am whole. The Christ method of healing is normal because it is in accord with the laws of being.
