Chapter XLII. The Dwelling-places of Wisdom

1.Wisdom found no place where she might dwell;

Then a dwelling-place was assigned her in the heavens.

2.Wisdom went forth to make her dwelling among the children of men,

And found no dwelling-place:

Wisdom returned to her place,

And took her seat among the angels.

3.And unrighteousness went forth from her chambers:

Whom she sought not she found,

And dwelt with them,

As rain in a desert

And dew on a thirsty land.

Asked of Guide

Why does Wisdom fail to find a home among humans and instead sit with the angels?

The chapter says Wisdom “found no place where she might dwell” among humans, so Wisdom “returned to her place, and took her seat among the angels.” That sequence reports a search, a failure to settle with mortals, and an elective retreat back to the heavenly realm.

The text then shows unrighteousness attaching itself to humanity: “Whom she sought not she found, and dwelt with them,” like “rain in a desert.” The contrast echoes Proverbs’ portrait of Wisdom as a heavenly figure who invites but is often rejected; compare Proverbs where Wisdom calls out to people and is ignored, which explains why Wisdom withdraws to the angels here.
