Secrets of Enoch: Chapter XXVI
God summons from the very lowest a second time that Archas, heavy and very red should come forth.
1.AND I summoned the very lowest a second time, and said: ‘Let Archas come forth hard,’ and he came forth hard from the invisible.
2.And Archas came forth, hard, heavy, and very red.
3.And I said: ‘Be opened, Archas, and let there be born from thee,’ and he came undone, an age came forth, very great and very dark, bearing the creation of all lower things, and I saw that it was good and said to him:
4.‘Go thou down below, and make thyself firm, and be for a foundation for the lower things,’ and it happened and he went down and fixed himself, and became the foundation for the lower things, and below the darkness there is nothing else.
Asked of Guide
Why does Enoch summon Archas from the lowest twice and what is Archas' role?
Enoch summons Archas a second time to bring forth a primal, dark age that will ground the lower creation; the chapter says Archas comes “hard, heavy, and very red” and from him “an age came forth, very great and very dark.” This summoned being becomes a foundational principle: Enoch tells him to “make thyself firm” and he descends to become the foundation for the lower things.
The chapter presents Archas as a cosmogonic stabilizer for the material realm, the anchor beneath darkness where “below the darkness there is nothing else.” This resembles motifs in Genesis and in 1 Enoch where primordial figures or waters are ordered to form a stable world, and it echoes the Book of Jubilees’ concern with ordered origins.
