First Adam and Eve: Chapter XX

Adam wishes to protect Eve.

1.THEN Adam wept and said, “O God, remove us to some other place, that the serpent may not come again near us, and rise against us. Lest it find Thy handmaid Eve alone and kill her; for its eyes are hideous and evil.”

2.But God said to Adam and Eve, “Henceforth fear not, I will not let it come near you; I have driven it away from you, from this mountain; neither will I leave in it aught to hurt you.”

3.Then Adam and Eve worshipped before God ‘and gave Him thanks, and praised Him for having delivered them from death.

Asked of Guide

Why does Adam ask God to move them away from the serpent?

Adam asks God to move them because he fears the serpent will “rise against” and “kill” Eve; he pictures Eve alone and vulnerable and wants to protect her from the creature’s “hideous and evil” eyes. His plea is practical and immediate: remove the danger or remove them from its reach.

God replies by promising protection in place, saying He has “driven it away” from the mountain and will leave nothing there to hurt them, which redirects Adam’s request into assurance rather than relocation. This echoes Genesis’ theme of divine protection after exile and reads like the same promise found in Genesis where God watches over the first pair.
