First Adam and Eve: Chapter XL

The first Human hunger.

1.THEN the Word of God came to Adam, and said unto him, “O, Adam, why hadst thou not this dread, neither this fasting, nor this care ere this? And why hadst thou not this fear before thou didst transgress?

2.“But when thou camest to dwell in this strange land, thy animal body could not be on earth without earthly food, to strengthen it and to restore its powers.”

3.And God withdrew His Word from Adam.

Asked of Guide

Why did God tell Adam he lacked fear and fasting before the fall?

The chapter shows God pointing to Adam’s sudden bodily hunger after exile: his “animal body could not be on earth without earthly food,” so Adam never needed fear or fasting in Eden. God is diagnosing a new condition—mortality and dependency—brought by living in a “strange land.”

God’s rebuke explains that practices like dread, fasting, and care arise from the embodied vulnerability outside Eden. This echoes Genesis’ exile theme and anticipates later texts, like Hebrews, which treat suffering and hunger as markers of our fallen, embodied state.
