Secrets of Enoch: Chapter XXXVIII

XXXVIII.

Mathusal continued to have hope and to await his father Enoch at his couch day and night.

1.AND the Lord said to those men who first led me up: ‘Let Enoch go down on to earth with you, and await him till the determined day.’

2.And they placed me by night on my couch.

3.And Mathusal expecting my coming, keeping watch by day and by night at my couch, was filled with awe when he heard my coming, and I told him, ‘Let all my household come together, that I tell them everything.’

Asked of Guide

Why does Enoch tell Mathusal to gather the household after he returns?

Enoch returns to his couch and finds Mathusal “keeping watch by day and by night,” so Enoch asks him to gather the household so he can “tell them everything.” The chapter shows Enoch intends to share the revelations he received during the ascent rather than keep them private.

This scene echoes the pattern in 1 Enoch where visionary knowledge is given for transmission to kin and community; Enoch acts as a mediator who must report divine mysteries back to his family. Naming Mathusal’s vigilant waiting makes the household’s reception of the message an intentional, communal event.
