Odes of Solomon: Ode 13

A strange little Ode.

1.Behold! the Lord is our mirror: open the eyes and see them in Him: and learn the manner of your face: 2 And tell forth praise to His spirit: and wipe off the filth from your face: and love His holiness and clothe yourselves therewith: 3 And be without stain at all times before Him. Hallelujah.

Asked of Guide

Why does the Ode call the Lord a mirror and tell us to learn our face in Him?

The Ode presents the Lord as a mirror so we can see our true nature reflected and corrected in divine presence: “the Lord is our mirror: open the eyes and see them in Him.” It treats self-knowledge as ethical instruction — seeing oneself in God leads to wiping off filth, loving holiness, and clothing oneself with it.

The three imperatives — see, praise, and be without stain — form a short spiritual program rooted in perception and transformation. This echoes themes in Corinthians where Paul says Christians are transformed into Christ’s image by beholding him; the Ode compresses that into a poetic call to moral and liturgical attention.
