Chapter 33

He who knows other men is discerning; he who knows himself is intelligent. He who overcomes others is strong; he who overcomes himself is mighty. He who is satisfied with his lot is rich; he who goes on acting with energy has a (firm) will.

He who does not fail in the requirements of his position, continues long; he who dies and yet does not perish, has longevity.

Asked of Guide

What does Lao Tzu mean by “he who overcomes himself is mighty”?

Lao Tzu says overcoming others shows strength, overcoming oneself shows might; self-mastery is an inner power that outlasts external victories. The chapter pairs knowing others with discernment and knowing oneself with intelligence, so self-overcoming flows from clear self-knowledge and steady will.

The text links self-mastery to lasting effect: one “who dies and yet does not perish, has longevity,” meaning inner victory preserves you beyond immediate circumstance. This idea resonates with Chuang Tzu, who credits the sage’s achievements to alignment with the way rather than flashy conquest.
