Secrets of Enoch: Chapter II

The Instruction. How Enoch instructed his sons.

LISTEN to me, my children, I know not whither I go, or what will befall me; now therefore, my children, I tell you: turn not from God before the face of the vain, who made not Heaven and earth, for these shall perish and those who worship them, and may the Lord make confident your hearts in the fear of him. And now, my children, let no one think to seek me, until the Lord return me to you.

Asked of Guide

Why does Enoch warn his sons against seeking him until the Lord returns him?

Enoch tells his sons he does not know “whither I go, or what will befall me,” and he orders them to “turn not from God before the face of the vain,” tying his absence to a test of fidelity: his departure withdraws a human anchor so their worship of God stands on its own. The command “let no one think to seek me, until the Lord return me to you” frames his leaving as temporary and purposeful, a safeguard against idolatry and reliance on a human mediator.

This passage echoes themes in Hebrews where human intermediaries point to God rather than replace him, and it mirrors Genesis’s insistence on fearing God rather than created things. Enoch’s instruction aims to preserve his children’s confidence “in the fear of him,” making obedience during his absence the proof of true faith.
