Secrets of Enoch: Chapter III

Of Enoch’s assumption; how the angels took him into the first heaven.

IT came to pass, when Enoch had told his sons, that the angels took him on to their wings and bore him up on to the first heaven and placed him on the clouds. And there I looked, and again I looked higher, and saw the ether, and they placed me on the first heaven and showed me a very great Sea, greater than the earthly sea.

Asked of Guide

Why do the angels carry Enoch into the first heaven and show him a great sea?

The chapter records Enoch’s assumption: after he speaks with his sons, “the angels took him on to their wings and bore him up on to the first heaven,” which frames the ascent as an act of divine escort and revelation. They place him “on the clouds” and then “showed me a very great Sea,” so the carrying functions to transport Enoch to a new cosmological vantage where heavenly features—here a greater sea—are revealed.

This scene continues the book’s pattern of guided, visionary ascent that appears elsewhere in apocryphal literature, where intermediaries lead a righteous seer through layered heavens to disclose cosmological realities; for a parallel, compare 2 Enoch’s angelic guides who similarly present the heavens’ features.
