Gospel of Mary · 3 of 6

The Gospel

1.When the one who is blessed had said these things, he greeted all of them, saying: “Peace be with you. Receive my peace to yourselves.

2.Take care that no one leads you astray, saying: ‘Behold here!’ or ‘Behold there!’ because the Son of Man is inside you; follow him.

3.Those who look for him will find him.

4.Then go, preach the gospel of the kingdom.

5.Do not lay down any rules beyond those I assigned to you, and do not promulgate a law like the lawgiver did, so that you will not be obligated to it.”

6.When he had said these things, he left them.

Asked of Guide

Why does Jesus say “the Son of Man is inside you; follow him” instead of pointing to an external leader?

Jesus tells the group that “the Son of Man is inside you; follow him” to redirect authority inward: the kingdom and its guide are experienced within each seeker, so looking for signs “Behold here!” or “Behold there!” is a category error. He charges them to “preach the gospel of the kingdom” from that inward place and to avoid creating extra rules or a new lawgiver who would turn that inward experience into outer obligation.

This passage echoes Gnostic priorities found in Fragments of a Faith Forgotten, which also treats receiving the risen one as an inner reception rather than an institutional handing-on. The final injunction to avoid promulgating law recalls critiques in the canonical Gospels and in later mystical writers who resist clericalizing spiritual insight.
