Bell's brief note that 'Christ's gift of healing was due to a miraculous quality in His breath' reflects the standard Quranic-Islamic Christology. Sūra 3:49 has Jesus say 'I will heal the blind and the leper, and bring the dead to life by Allah's permission.' Sūra 5:110 mentions the breath that animated the clay birds. For Sufi poets, the breath of Jesus (dam-i ʿĪsā, nafas-i Masīhā) becomes a stock metaphor for the spiritually quickening word — the Pir's teaching that revives a dead heart. Hafiz uses it constantly.
